About the Session:
A study in 2012 found that 75% of people with mental health issues who have received a hopeless message about recovery received that message from a healthcare provider. This has been true to my experience as a mental health consumer, being told numerous times that I will never fully recover. In this presentation, the question I aim to answer is ‘why are healthcare providers the #1 source of hopelessness for mental health consumers?’ Some of the topics I will explore are how the larger political landscape affects our work, compassion fatigue, mental health professionals as ‘experts,’ having lived experience as a mental health professional, and barriers to therapeutic use of self. I will also explore some techniques for fostering a sense of hope with our clients.
