About the Session:
An integral part of the Housing First model is intensive case management and support to navigate social opportunities within the community. Groups and recreational activities that are client driven and create a sense of self-worth and assist with reasons to stay sober. Social behaviour is shaped through Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and skills are developed that improving functional communication abilities, personal relationships, and empowers self-awareness and advocacy. Building daily structure with social opportunities is the key to success, enhancing quality of life and community tenure.
This presentation about the crucial role of the Housing Selection Worker within a Housing First team, will provide you with strategies on how to build relationships with property owners, how to work with small independent landlords, all without subsidized housing. Ongoing support, negotiations between the client and landlord and team communication are all keys to success. CMHA Middlesex will share their Landlord Recruitment Policy and approaches in dealing with unwanted guests through their 5 Step Guide to Guest Management.
Jeff Hardy is a Housing Stability Worker, DBT Coach, and Public Educator at CMHA Middlesex. He holds a degree in Anthropology and Psychology from Western, and is a certified yoga instructor. In his former role as a probation and parole officer, he implemented mindfulness practices in both government and community organizations.
Lorna Anderson has been fortunate to spend the majority of her 13 year career working as a recreation therapist within mental health services. She has a background in humanities from the University of Toronto, and completed post graduate studies in Therapeutic Recreation from Georgian College. Lorna believes strongly in the power of leisure experiences to promote healing, connection, and to increase meaning in our lives.
David Small is a graduate of Western University, with a BA in Social Science. David has worked for 28 years in the field of community mental health for various agencies, in many programs such as Supportive Housing, Case Management, Community Outreach, and Mobile Crisis Response. For the past 3 years David has held the Housing Selection and Advocacy Worker position with CMHA Middlesex Housing First Team.
